Sheffield Utd 4-2 Wrexham (Aug 13, 2024) Game Analysis

Sheffield United came from behind to beat Wrexham 4-2 on Tuesday to put a quick end to the newly-promoted League One side’s Carabao Cup campaign.

The hosts were by far the better team throughout at Bramall Lane, but went behind against the run of play in the 29th minute when William Boyle scored from close range following a corner kick.

However, reality set in for the upstart visitors after that with Auston Trusty smashing a header just over the line to level things before the break and Lewis Brunt turning a Rhian Brewster cross into his own net early in the second half to put Sheffield United in front.

A foul on Anis Ben Slimane in the area sent Brewster to the spot, but his penalty attempt was turned away only for Louie Marsh to sneak the rebound past Wrexham keeper Callum Burton to all but seal the win for United.

Ben Slimane added Sheffield’s fourth — marking his first goal for the club since joining in 2023 — and Sebastian Revan scored a consolation for Wrexham just before the final whistle blew.

It’s been a remarkable few seasons for Wrexham, who have been promoted in consecutive years, first to League Two following the 2022-23 season and then to League One last year.

The team made a winning return to England’s third-tier of football on Saturday, beating Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 in their first League One match in 20 years.

There’s recent history between the two sides, who played a tense FA Cup fourth-round replay in 2023, which Sheffield United won with a pair of extra-time goals. Including Tuesday’s result, it’s been 41 years since the Welsh side have beaten United.
