No point in doom and gloom after 11-1 loss – Queen’s Park co-head coach

Craig Joyce believes there’s no merit in “doom and gloom” following Queen’s Park’s 11-1 loss to Hearts in Sunday’s SWPL opener.

The promoted side trailed 4-1 at half-time and lost seven more goals in the second period.

It was a weekend of high scoring in the division with Rangers beating Aberdeen 11-0, champions Celtic opening with a 9-0 defeat of Dundee United, Glasgow City scoring seven without reply against Montrose and Motherwell recording a 5-1 victory over Spartans.

Joyce, who co-head coaches Queen’s Park with Iain Ferrie, watched the heavy defeat back before featuring on the BBC’s Behind the Goals podcast.

And he said: “Everybody was realistic in terms of what we were coming up against.

“I don’t think we were naive. I watched a lot of Hearts from last season. They’re a different team from last season. They’re quicker, they’re more mobile, they’ve got more energy.

“There’s no point in being down and doom and gloom about it and no point making excuses. We weren’t good enough second half. The first half we were totally fine.

“It’s just a steep, steep learning curve for a young, young team.”
