Sammie Szmodics: Ipswich Town sign Republic of Ireland forward from Blackburn Rovers

Ipswich have completed the signing of forward Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers.

Szmodics, 28, was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 27 goals.

The Republic of Ireland international joins the Tractor Boys on a four-year deal after a fee of £9m plus add-on bonuses was agreed.

“It’s every boy’s dream to play in the Premier League and I’ve always said to my friends, family and agents that I’ll get to the top one day,” Szmodics said.

“There’s nothing more I want than to score at Portman Road for Ipswich Town. I am over the moon to be here and looking forward to the season ahead.”

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna said: “We think Sam brings a lot of different qualities to the squad and is an experienced player who has worked extremely hard over the years to improve his game and to become more and more effective as a player.”

A move to Suffolk see Szmodics moving closer to home, having been born in Colchester.

He made 162 appearances, scoring 38 goals, for his hometown club and has also played for Bristol City and Peterborough.

Szmodics could make his debut for Ipswich when they begin their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on Saturday (12:30 BST).

The club are also poised to sign England midfielder Kalvin Phillips on a season-long loan from Manchester City.
