Trent Alexander-Arnold confirms stance on future midfield role

Trent Alexander-Arnold has revealed he is on “the path” to becoming a central midfielder after a number of impressive showings in the role.

The Liverpool man has notably transitioned into a central midfield role in recent months under England manager Gareth Southgate, and at club level Jurgen Klopp has been keen to utilise him as an inverted full-back – slotting into the heart of the Liverpool midfield when the team are in possession of the ball.

Speaking to Liverpool Echo about where his future role at both club and international level could be, Alexander-Arnold admitted his belief that he is naturally transitioning into becoming a midfielder, stating:

“I think that’s probably the path and the route that I’m on. Ultimately, not my decision, but I enjoy playing in the middle of the pitch and just want to help the team win games, to be honest.”

Speaking back in October during the international break, the 25-year-old stated his excitement at his future in midfield with the Three Lions. Having struggled for game time at full-back for the national team, TAA has had much more success under Southgate as a midfielder – playing a career-high five games in a calendar year for his nation in 2023.

“With the conversations I’ve had, particularly with the manager here [at England], playing centrally in the middle of the pitch is something we want to look at going forward”, said Alexander-Arnold.

“That’s something that really excites me and I feel will get the best out of me in the [England] set-up. This is the most exciting time for me at England.”

Alexander-Arnold featured in an inverted full-back role for Liverpool once again at the weekend in a dramatic 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. However, with injuries mounting – Alexis Mac Allister missed the game due to a knee issue – and Wataru Endo’s rather disappointing outing at Selhurst Park taken into account, the 25-year-old may be set to move into midfield at club level very soon.
