USA vs. Mexico friendly set for Oct. 15 in Guadalajara

The United States men’s national team will face Mexico in a friendly to be held at Guadalajara’s Estadio Akron on Oct. 15, the respective federations announced on Monday.

The match marks the first friendly on Mexican soil between the two nations since 2012, when a goal from Michael Orozco led the U.S. to a 1-0 win, the USMNT’s only road win over El Tri to date.

This will also be the second game to be held during the October international window, with the USMNT set to face Panama three days earlier in Austin, Texas.

That match is widely expected to be the first in charge with Mauricio Pochettino, who has agreed personal terms to become the next manager of the USMNT, though some fine details remain to be sorted out, including compensation from previous club Chelsea.

The U.S. also has two friendlies during the September international window against Canada and Panama on Sept. 7 and Sept. 10, respectively.

A source told ESPN that former USMNT assistant Mikey Varas will take charge of the U.S. for those two matches.

The U.S. currently enjoys a seven-match winning streak against El Tri, dating back to the 3-2 extra time victory in the 2022 Concacaf Nations League final.

The most recent encounter between the two teams came in the 2024 CNL final, when goals from Tyler Adams and Gio Reyna paced the U.S. to a 2-0 victory.
