Wayne Rooney: Plymouth have good blend of attacking players

“Probably one of them each week is going to be disappointed because they won’t play, and that’s part of football – but it’s a long season.

“Ultimately, what you want is one of them can score on a regular basis and then that makes your decision a little bit easier.”

Rooney has so far only picked up one win in his first six league matches at Argyle but remains positive about the progress his side have made during a tough run of fixtures.

“I think we’re starting to see an identity to the team and it’s a change from where the team were last season,” said Rooney.

“We want to try and take the ball, but we also want to be quite effective with it as well. We don’t want to just pass the ball for the sake of it.

“I looked at the data from the last four games and we were projected fourth in the league. I’ve spoken to the forward players about living in the moment when we’re getting in dangerous areas and coming alive to try and score goals so that’s the one thing we’ve got to improve on.”

The former England captain has also been impressed with academy player Tegan Finn, who would add further depth to his attacking line.

“He [Finn] is with the first-team squad,” said Rooney. “He’ll drop back down [to the youth academy] to play games when he needs game time but I think what’s important is that he’s with us and he’ll be available for selection. I have no problem putting him in the squad and playing him.

“I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve seen from him out in Spain in pre-season. What we have to do now is get him up to speed, but I’m really excited with him.

And Rooney is confident his team are ready for Friday’s Luton game, adding: “I think our preparation has been excellent this week in terms of what we’re expecting of Luton, but also of what we expect of ourselves.

“I think we’re more than capable of winning the game – but we have to be at our best.”
